Running Domino as an Application vs a Service

I'm fine with items 1 & 2, but 3. Really? As an application? I guess I found this one surprising. Maybe I'm the only one. It does appear I'm able to get it to work as a service but still have some concerns this could be an issue in the future.
Here are some prerequisites for installing Domino on a NAS subsystem :
- There should be a Dedicated LAN between the NAS appliance and the Domino server.
- Domino needs to run under a user account that has network access and the appropriate permissions to the drive or share on the NAS appliance. A simple Domain account should suffice for the needed network access.
- On Microsoft Windows systems, if Domino runs as a service , there can be issues when Domino accesses the data on the NAS appliance. The local system account does not have security permission to access a drive over the network, which in essence is what the NAS appliance provides. It is therefore recommended to run Domino as an application when accessing data on NAS
Anyone have experience with these or thoughts on Running Domino as an Application? How do you handle restarts or server crashes? Placing Domino in the Startup folder? Just looking for some pros and cons of doing it this way.
